Design Description

Apart Together celebrates London’s diversity using Morph’s playfulness. The colourful humanoid shapes represent our unique attributes while being able to adapt and make space for those around us. This is how I aspire for diversity to be celebrated - we can appreciate our individual cultures and traditions, but ultimately, let’s be open to make space, learn from others and stand stronger together.

Artist Information

An independent artist, born in the UK from Jamaican and English heritage, I use my creativity to explore and express my journey as I discover where I ‘fit’ in the white and black diaspora. I lean towards ‘humanoid’ figures by playing with shapes, toying with ideas of beauty and traditional representations of people in art. My work favours clay modelling, but even when painting, I love tactility; being able to feel how I’ve moulded and shaped my creations.

Design Description

The design is inspired by the themes of accessibility and mobility, the title ‘Apples and Pears’ is the well-known London Cockney rhyming slang phrase meaning ‘stairs’…stairs and steps being a major challenge for anyone with mobility issues. The design is also a fun game of pairs, there are two the same of each apple and pear. And there is one pear that isn’t a pair, can you find the odd one out that doesn’t have a match?

Design Description

It’s much more important to be yourself than to follow the crowd and that’s the message behind my book, ‘Odd Dog Out’. The lead character (a dachshund) wears a rainbow striped scarf to emphasise the full spectrum of wonderful people (and dogs) in the world. Everybody has the right to live how they choose, and we love celebrating individuality. We are all so different and not one person (or Morph) is the same. We can all blaze our own trail – how cool is that?

Morph has so many amazing adventures, I thought a fitting outfit for him to try would be that of an old fashioned aviator (with a fabulous moustache of course)! I think Morph would make a great pilot, especially in an old biplane, performing amazing aerobatic manoeuvres like the daring loop the loop! Morph’s outfit includes a brown leather hat and goggles for safety, some sturdy lace up boots, beige trousers and a fun aviator’s jacket complete with logo on the back. It also includes a bright, white scarf to keep him warm when zooming around the skies!

I have always had a passion for drawing since a young age and finally got to complete my Masters in Illustration in 2020. I love being able to depict narrative through my drawings and have recently illustrated a children’s picture book - Alun in the Attic. I thoroughly enjoyed this experience as it had been a goal of mine for a number of years and is something that I have now achieved. I work with different media, digital, pencil, watercolour and acrylics. Over the last couple of years I have enjoyed painting pet portraits in acrylics, dogs being a particular favourite to paint as I have 2 of my own.

Born and raised on the North Wales coast amongst castles, ruins, mountains and beaches, on a diet of 80’s Saturday morning cartoons, comic books and movies, Carl Pearce wanted nothing more than to grow up to be a detective. However, that didn’t work out. Falling back on his ability to draw, Carl attended The North Wales School of Art and Design. He pursued a career in illustration. Carl still lives in North Wales, sketching artwork for children’s books all day, but now has the company of his lovely wife and two beautifully cheeky kids. And when he grows up he still wants to be a detective. Or a Ghostbuster.
